Selection conditions and criteria

The Paris Institute for Advanced Study welcomes junior and senior researchers from all regions of the world. fellows pursue research projects in the social  sciences and humanities (SSH), as well as neuro- and cognitive science, as long as applicants are open to dialogue with the SSH. Applications are open to any researcher seeking to take part in the Paris IAS’s internal activities in a spirit of exchange among fellows.

The Institute is bilingual (French and English), but some of the scientific and cultural activities it hosts are in French. Applicants should be at least fluent in English.

Paris IAS selects applicants based on the interest and originality of their research project, its potential impact (in its field and beyond as well as beyond academia), and the quality of their scientific experience. The Institute particularly encourages projects aiming at tackling important societal challenges. Another criteria is applicants’ ability to build ties and collaborate with researchers from the Paris region, notably at its founding members and partner institutions (Sorbonne Université, Université Gustave Eiffel, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3, Université Paris Cité, Université Paris Nanterre, Université Paris-Saclay, EHESS, EPHE-PSL, ENS-PSL, FMSH, INaLCO).

The Paris IAS attaches great importance to the quality and fairness of its selection process. All applications meeting the Institute's criteria are evaluated by independent experts, and the final selection is made by the IAS direction, after consultation with its multidisciplinary Scientific Advisory Board.

Eligibility and selection criteria may vary for different Calls for Applications. Please refer to each Call for Applications for details on these conditions.
