Series of conferences organized by the Institut d'études avancées de Paris and the École pratique des hautes études (EPHE-PSL).

Scientific coordination: Séverine Mathieu, EPHE-PSL

As we know, the very rapid changes in science raise questions that put living representations in conflict: what attitude should we have towards certain innovations? What to authorize? What should be prohibited? What to control?

On topics as diverse as the beginning and end of life, medically assisted procreation, medical intervention on living organisms, there are many discussions and questions. Many social actors are interested in it: doctors, researchers, religious, associations... During the first half of 2018, the Estates General of Bioethics organized themselves, inaugurating the debates on the next revision of bioethics laws. On 24 July 2019, a draft law was presented to the Council of Ministers and is being debated this autumn in the National Assembly.

From 17 October to 11 June 2020, the Institut d'études avancées de Paris (IEA) and the École pratique des hautes études (EPHE-PSL) intend to contribute to this reflection and contribute to the topicality of this debate by organizing a series of nine conferences involving many specialists in these issues. The major current issues in bioethics will be studied through the prism of various disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, neurosciences, political science and law.
