Reflection seminar, organized by Sylvaine Guyot, 2018-2019 IAS Fellow, in collaboration with the HAR laboratory of Paris Nanterre, with the support of the Partner University Fund and the Paris IAS.

This seminar (closed to the public) aims to question - from a theoretical, historical and political point of view - the notion of "spectacularity". What is the spectacular relationship with the fabric of consensus, theological-political thinking, and expenditure savings?

In particular, the establishment and progressive institution of a "culture of brightness" in the first modernity will be studied, in order to understand how the spectacular becomes, from the 17th century onwards - and remains so until today - a dominant visual regime, installed at the heart of power practices, social practices and aesthetic speculations.

Organization :
Christian Biet (Paris Nanterre, HAR)
Sylvaine Guyot (Harvard University)
