New session of the "Paris IAS Ideas" online talk series, with the participation of Javier Pérez Burgos, policy specialist and development economist in Wêia, a Colombian fintech, and Paris IAS Fellow in residence in December 2025.

The "Paris IAS Ideas" online talk series features short and stimulating presentations from fellows of the Paris Institute for Advanced Study, marking the beginning of 1-month writing residencies.

Presentation

This project, presented on 5 December, aims to explore how emerging technologies — blockchain, fintech and data platforms — can profoundly transform smallholder farming, a pillar of global food security but too often marginalised.

Using concrete examples, it analyses how blockchain can increase transparency in value chains and how real-time data can provide hyper-localised, climate-smart agricultural advice.

The goal is to create inclusive and sustainable models of agricultural innovation and rethink rural development through digital finance and farmer empowerment.
