Presentation by Christelle Fischer-Bovet (University of Southern California, Paris IAS) as part of the seminar “Histoire et anthropologie du monde grec”, organised by Romain Guicharrousse, Lucia Rossi, Violaine Sebilotte, Stéphanie Wackenier,  Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University.

Presentation of the session

This paper examines how ordinary individuals could interact with the imperial institutions developed by the Ptolemies—the successors of Alexander the Great in Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean—to obtain justice, and who could most easily benefit from the judicial system. Is this a successful example of the application of legal pluralism and accessibility to the king's justice?

Seminar presentation

The seminar sessions are devoted to the presentation and discussion of recent research in the field of the history of Greek cities and Hellenistic kingdoms, based on the presentation of books published during the year by their authors (cycle entitled ‘presentation of a work by its author’), or work in progress, generally by doctoral students, guest researchers from UMR 8210 ANHIMA (Anthropology and History of the Ancient Worlds) or researchers who are members of the laboratory.

The seminar is part of a comprehensive approach to classical and Hellenistic Greek antiquity, combining scholarship specific to documentation and its transmission, questions of social and economic history, and multidisciplinarity.
