Program
"Women Artists: Subverting Submission" revisits the careers of Abigail de Andrade, Julieta de França and Georgina de Albuquerque to highlight the tensions between recognition and erasure of women in the visual arts in Brazil between the 19th and 20th centuries. Inspired by Ana Paula Calvacanti Simioni’s book Profissão Artista, this documentary highlights the obstacles faced by these artists and the strategies they employed to carve out a space for themselves and assert their presence in art history. An invitation to critical reflection on the visibility, memory and invisibility of women in the artistic sphere.
