Entrepreneurship and innovation in China

The promotion of entrepreneurship and innovation is one of the main priorities of national development in China. However, little is known about the large number of entrepreneurs and the innovation practices of their enterprises, mainly due to a lack of data. From 2016 to 2019, Xiaobo Zhang conducted a major survey to collect such data. The objective of the residency will be to write a background paper in English on the design and implementation of the survey, as well as its main findings.

The residency will also be devoted to examining the issue of the quality of Chinese patents, the number of which has exploded over the past decade. The quality of Chinese patents has exploded in the last decade and is now increasingly subject to criticism. Using detailed data from the Peking University Enterprise Research Center, coupled with data from other administrative enterprise databases, it will be possible to determine whether the quality of patents makes it possible to assert that Chinese enterprises have become more innovative, or in other words whether the great leap forward in Chinese patents is real.
