Abstract
This research analyses the relationship between planned infrastructure and informal land occupation in Rio de Janeiro. Drawing on a theoretical framework that brings together references from critical urbanism, infrastructure planning and the notion of informality as a source of urban innovation, a territorial mapping exercise was carried out in the northern and western areas of the city, known as the ‘Carioca railway suburbs’, complemented by case studies combining direct observation and photographic documentation. The results show that informal action not only responds to supply shortfalls but also generates local centres of activity, integrates social and economic functions, and demonstrates the potential to transform infrastructure into urban architecture. This dynamic highlights the need to rethink urban projects, incorporating open-design strategies that foster resilience, inclusion and hybrid functionality, thereby contributing to the reduction of socio-spatial inequality and to planning that is more sensitive to context.
