Presentation

The performance is part of Radio Free Stein, Adam Frank's (IEA Fellow, 2018-19) critical and collaborative sound project that renders ten plays by Gertrude Stein in the form of radio melodrama. How can we understand the influence of Stein's "landscape theater" poetics on non-naturalist theater? What do her poetics tell us about theatricality and dramatic form in the context of those institutions of broadcasting media that seek to regulate affective experience? And what new affordances for understanding Stein's plays, and for criticism in general, emerge from bringing critics and composers together to interpret them as radio melodramas? (Recordings and more information on the project can be found at www.radiofreestein.com)

This event is made possible with support from l'ensemble Dedalus, l'Institut d'études avancées de Paris, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
