Responsible use of generative AI for science and society

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is developing at lightning speed, with new models rapidly approaching human-level performance in areas that used to be uniquely reliant on human intelligence. Generative AI creates unprecedented opportunities, Yet it poses potential risks. An interdisciplinary group of researchers has called for action to strive for international guidelines on the responsible use of generative AI in scientific research and society (Bockting et alii, Nature, February 2023). To further this aim, two invitational summits were held in 2023 with stakeholders and representatives involved with scientific research, publishing, technology, and ethics. A first set of “living guidelines” to promote a responsible use of generative AI based on values of accountability, transparency, and independent oversight was proposed (Nature, October 2023).

Several initiatives to regulate (generative) AI have been taking shape. The third invitational summit will aim to further identify the main priorities to safeguard the responsible use of generative AI and to envisage the next steps towards establishing an independent auditing body. The meeting is co-organized by the worldwide UBIAS network, the Paris Institute for Advanced Study and the University of Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Study The meeting will gather selected scholars as well as experts of the OECD, the UNESCO, the ISC, the European Commission.
