Presentation

There is no neutral method for transcribing oral talk (voices and narratives) from interviews and conversations in qualitative research.
Different conventions have different functions and goals and are determined by the researchers’ theoretical, methodological, ideological and aesthetic motives.

For this workshop, we encourage participants to share examples from their own work and consider the dilemmas they face in the transcription process. Some of the central questions are:

  1. On what basis do we make transcription choices?
  2. What is omitted/erased/added to transcribed texts?
  3. What are the challenges and opportunities of more creative ways of transcribing?
  4. For research in languages other than English: How to think about translations?
