Presentation
The symposium "The archives and collections of the École pratique des hautes études: perspectives on scholarly memory" is part of current research on the history of the institution. Following the publication of a book celebrating the 150th anniversary of the École pratique des hautes études (L'École pratique des hautes Ééudes. Invention, érudition, innovation de 1868 à nos jours, edited by Patrick Henriet, Somogy, 2018), the EPHE-PSL's research and archives department, under the direction of Cécile Bernal-Beauger, head of the research department's archives at the École pratique des hautes études (EPHE-PSL), has published a detailed inventory of the institution's archives, which lists and identifies all of the EPHE's that have been processed and then transferred or deposited by the institution with archive services or libraries.
This important tool provides multiple perspectives on the intellectual history of this institution and enables a comparison of research methods in the many fields that the school has explored since its foundation in 1868. First and foremost, the inventory reveals the administrative history of the institution through detailed descriptions of the institutional archives that bear witness to the existence of the six original sections. Career files, for example, make it possible to follow the academic trajectories of the School's various scholars, teachers and researchers, thus also providing a glimpse of the collaborations and ‘families of thought’ formed with other scholarly institutions.
The presidents or deans of these different sections are themselves scholars, so their administrative archives often contain evidence of their own research. This research can be traced in the section of the inventory dedicated to ‘Archives and collections of researchers - scholarly figures’, supplemented by course reports and conference summaries in the School's yearbooks.
The main features of this inventory, which traces the history of teaching and research at the École Pratique des Hautes Études since 1868, will be addressed in the various papers presented at the conference: in the humanities - notably philology, history, art history, archaeology, Egyptology, Indian studies, Iranian studies, religious studies, or in the life and earth sciences - notably biological anthropology, climatology, and herpetology.
The history of the conservation of these researchers' collections also bears witness to important institutional exchanges in the field of research, highlighting communities of thought: the collections are preserved in various heritage and conservation institutions – the BNF, the National Archives, the Collège de France and, more recently, the Humathèque – a geography of conservation that the conference will examine.
The two-day event, which will bring together archivists, library professionals and researchers from a wide range of disciplines, including the humanities, life sciences and earth sciences, will examine these collections in all their diversity in order to provide a broad perspective on the institutional and intellectual history of the School, the researchers and scholars who have made it renowned, and its libraries, laboratories, institutes and research organisations.
