Presentation of the inaugural session

This inaugural session offers an in-depth reflection on the meaning of the word rupture. It will explore its philosophical foundations through the question of the breaking of ties, while examining its manifestations and meanings in the contemporary world.

At the crossroads of philosophy and international relations, the discussion will highlight the tensions, recompositions and fragilities that permeate our societies.

The session, moderated by Bettina Laville, President of the Institute, will feature Bertrand Badie, political scientist and Professor Emeritus at Sciences Po Paris, and Nassim El Kabli, Doctor and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Lille.

Speakers

Bertrand Badie is Professor Emeritus at Sciences Po Paris, an agrégé and Doctor of Political Science, and a graduate of Sciences Po Paris and INALCO. His work focuses on sociology and international relations theory, multilateralism and the evolution of the state. He was director of collections at Presses de Sciences Po (1994-2003) and the Rotary Centre for International Studies on Peace and Conflict Resolution (2001-2005). He is a frequent contributor to the media, particularly the programme L’esprit public on France Culture.

He is the author of some fifty books, including Inter-socialités.

Nassim El Kabli is a professor of philosophy and lecturer and researcher at the University of Lille. His work focuses in particular on the concept of connection, notably in the work of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He is the author of La Rupture. Philosophie d’une expérience ordinaire (L’Harmattan, 2015), Soi-même par un autre. Figures d’exemplarité, figures d’exemple (Mimésis, 2021) and Le « vrai » métier des philosophes (France Culture/Fayard, 2024), based on his columns broadcast on France Culture in the summer of 2023.

Presentation of the cycle

Organised by Bettina Laville, President of the Paris IAS and Honorary State Councillor, this series of meetings consists of four sessions devoted to analysing contemporary transformations. It explores the notions of rupture and transition, perceived as hopes, threats or vertigo, and their impact on values, society and everyday life. The discussions will draw on intellectual, political and anthropological perspectives to understand the profound dynamics shaping our era.
