Presentation

Since the release of ChatGPT in 2022, in media coverage and among technologists, science is often presented as a poster child to illustrate the benefits of LLMs. Among scientists, the situation is more complicated, with debates raging about the opportunities, risks, and ethical problems raised by LLMs and artificial intelligence (AI) agents.

Drawing on ethnographic methods, this project focuses on the case of astrophysics—a data-intensive, highly computational, and open scientific field—to examine how scientists are currently negotiating norms about the growing role of AI technologies in the scientific process.
