Online conférence by Kathinka Evers, Professor of philosophy, and senior researcher at the Centre for Research Ethics & Bioethics (CRB) at Uppsala University, and fellow for a one-month writing residency at the Paris IAS as part of the "Distinguished Fellowship" programme developed in collaboration with PostGenAI@Paris.

PostGenAI@Paris: based in the heart of Paris, this interdisciplinary and cross-sector consortium aims to develop ethical, inclusive and sovereign AI that is fully anchored in the major challenges of our time.

The "Paris IAS Ideas" online lecture series offers short and stimulating presentations by researchers from the Paris Institute for Advanced Studies, marking the start of their month-long writing residency.

Presentation

Research on consciousness at the interface of philosophy, neuroscience and AI has brought considerable new knowledge, helping scientists and philosophers clarify definitions of consciousness and ways to measure and benchmark it. In this field, artificial consciousness research provides ways to develop new theories of consciousness, test and operationalize current theories and models on robots, hence raising new insights and questions that also have strong social relevance. The aim of this proposal is to raise three closely related questions:

1. Why strive to develop conscious artificial systems?
2. Is artificial consciousness possible?
3. Could artificial consciousness be recognised?
