The 2026-2027 cohort brochure is available. It presents the projects of 41 fellows hosted at the Hôtel de Lauzun for stays ranging from a few weeks to ten months. Further fellows will join the Institute over the course of the year, as selections proceed.

A word from the Director

Here are the research projects of the residents of the 2026-2027 cohort. This cohort enriches the Parisian and Île-de-France research ecosystem through innovative work, diverse perspectives and recognised expertise. Once again this year, more than half of the projects address major societal challenges, and we are delighted.

Whether for an individual or group residency, a short or long stay, the Institute offers an exceptional environment for work and exchange in the beautiful Hôtel de Lauzun, made available to the IAS by the City of Paris. In this extraordinary setting, collective intelligence flourishes in offices, seminars and lectures, and of course over meals, where residents and their colleagues from Greater Paris share ideas and projects.

Research programmes

The Paris Institute for Advanced Study offers its resident researchers several types of stays and a range of research programmes. Short or long, individual or collective, Paris IAS research residencies enable international researchers to join a high-level academic community, foster collaborations with the Parisian and Île-de-France ecosystem, and develop collective intelligence.

LONG STAYS (5-10 months)

Non-thematic residencies

The research projects of long-stay fellows at the Paris IAS may fall within any discipline or theme in the social sciences, the humanities, and other disciplines concerned with societal issues. The Institute selects projects distinguished by their excellence and by that of the researchers who lead them. The impact that this research can have beyond its discipline, and beyond academia more generally, is particularly valued in the selection of the many applications the Paris IAS receives each year. These projects also stand out for their originality, whether because they employ new methodologies, bring theoretical innovations to the state of the art, or are rooted in an interdisciplinary field.

The FIAS programme

Most long-stay fellows at the Paris IAS benefit from the FIAS (French Institutes for Advanced Study) international mobility programme, funded by the European Horizon Europe programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (GA-101217263). The Institute is one of the French institutions coordinated by the French Network of Institutes for Advanced Study (RFIEA) taking part in this programme, which enables high-level researchers to develop their projects during ten-month residencies within the local university ecosystem.

Research chairs

In collaboration with several of its members and partners, the Paris IAS has developed research chairs available to certain long-stay residents:
– The City of Paris Chair, created with the support of the municipality,
– The Riksbankens Jubileumsfond Chair, created with the Swedish central bank's foundation,
– The CAS programme with the Centre for Advanced Study at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, as part of a partnership with the Gudmund Hernes Foundation.

SHORT STAYS (1 to 3 months)

"Paris IdeAS" writing residencies

Since September 2023, writing residencies have offered one-month stays at the Paris IAS to work on an article presenting and developing an idea or concept, in order to shape it into a widely accessible publication with the potential to become influential beyond its discipline. These short stays host researchers in the humanities and social sciences, as well as experts who have recently held senior positions. All are selected by a group of "Editorial Fellows" and by the Paris IAS Scientific Council, and are invited for a set period.

The CAT programme (Constructive Advanced Thinking)

Launched in 2019 by the Paris IAS and supported by some ten European institutes for advanced study that are members of the NetIAS network, the CAT programme supports small groups of early-career researchers in the humanities and social sciences who devote themselves to developing new ideas to understand and address current and emerging societal challenges by proposing concrete solutions. Open and non-thematic, the CAT programme supports emerging research collectives and encourages openness to non-academic actors.

Invitation programmes

In collaboration with several of its members and partners, the Paris IAS has developed programmes available to certain short-stay residents:
– The PostGenAI@Paris programme, led by Sorbonne University,
– The invitation programme in partnership with the CNRS,
– The HERMES programme (Heritage in the Making: Emerging Strategies), led by Université Sorbonne Nouvelle under the France 2030 AMI SHS call,
– The RELIGIS programme (Religions and Societies Facing Contemporary Challenges), led by the University of Strasbourg under the France 2030 AMI SHS call,
– The CAS programme, which hosts short-stay residents in partnership with the Gudmund Hernes Foundation. The first fellow will arrive in spring 2027,
– The Brain, Culture and Society programme.

The Paris IAS in figures

Since its creation in 2008, the Institute has hosted more than 520 researchers of 65 nationalities, working in 28 disciplines and coming from 300 international institutions. These residencies have given rise to more than 1,000 events and 1,200 publications.
