Presentation
La Maison du Mexique is organising a discussion in English with Willibald Sonnleitner (Paris IAS / El Colegio de México) on the topic Democratic representation of minorities: lessons from Mexico’s experience with affirmative action quotas.
Willibald Sonnleitner is a tenured professor and researcher at El Colegio de México, where he teaches political science, electoral sociology and research methodology. He has also been a visiting professor at Sciences Po and at the universities of Columbia, Chicago and Harvard.
An international expert in electoral administration and institutional engineering, he has participated in 21 electoral observation and assistance missions in Latin America. Winner of the Mexican National Prize for Social Research and Public Opinion, he is a regular contributor to the media.
His current research focuses on the political representation of vulnerable minorities, legislative quotas and affirmative action policies. He has published extensively on elections and voting, political violence and ethnicity, electoral geography, polarisation, and processes of democratisation and de-democratisation.
In September 2025, Willibald Sonnleitner joined the Paris Institute for Advanced Studies for a ten-month research fellowship.
