Jonathan Glasser, anthropologist, 2019-2020 Fellow at the Paris IAS, presents his research project Muslim-Jewish musical intimacy in Algeria and France to the other researchers of the Institute on the occasion of the weekly internal seminar.

What can music teach us about Muslim-Jewish relations in Algeria, France, and beyond in the modern era? In the frequently fraught field of Muslim-Jewish relations in Algeria and its diaspora, music has often been held up as a positive point of connection. This project combines ethnographic and archival methods to consider the complex kinds of work that music has sometimes been made to do in the Jewish-Muslim relationship, both in the past and in the present.
