Lecture by Benjamin Dibling, Deputy Managing Director et Head of the licensing and corporate contracts teams at Penn University

Exploiting the social and economic value of research results is a considerable source of impact and revenue for higher education establishments worldwide. Yet studies suggest that even in countries with strong initiatives in this area, such as the USA, universities capture only 16% of the value they help to create through licensing revenues or equity stakes in start-ups arising from their research. These challenges are even greater in some areas of the social sciences and humanities, where the operationalization and economic potential of research results are not always clear. Experience and international studies show that universities need clear policies and resources for the economic valorization of research, academic staff with experience in the economic valorization of scientific results, and interdisciplinary research to successfully translate research into social and economic results.

Thanks to a coherent strategy, the consolidation of all its commercialization services into a single center, and the construction of a state-of-the-art collaboration and incubation space, the University of Pennsylvania has become the country's leading university in terms of licensing revenues (reaching 1,000 million USD in annual revenues generated by the commercialization of the university's intellectual property products).
