Présentation

Professor Ian Forrest (Oxford)
‘Microhistories of moral authority in late medieval parishes’
Respondant: Frédérique Lachaud
In this paper Ian Forrest will present evidence from fifteenth-century English and French visitations and church courts that – he contends – illuminate claims made by women to possess moral authority. They are micro-histories in the sense of dealing with politics in very small worlds, but also in deriving from minute pieces of evidence: in several cases a single sentence in the record. The protagonists had no institutional or documentary voice. They performed a physical politics of direct action and theatre. Their claims to moral authority were a world apart from literate discussions of conscience and moral authority, but they may be the typical engagements with those abstract values for the majority of the late medieval European population.

Professor John Sabapathy (UCL)
