Nexus between climate shocks, conflicts and poverty in Nigeria: the role of resilience and gender policies in addressing the three pandemics
In most developing countries, the agriculture sector offers the pathway to achieving food security and economic development. This is particularly true for sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where agriculture contributes up to 50% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provide livelihoods to majority of the rural population. Climate change-induced shocks, such as increased temperature, drought and flood continue to threaten the agricultural systems in many countries in SSA. These climatic shocks are accompanied by rapid population growth and sporadic conflicts thereby exacerbating the already high rate of poverty and hunger in SSA.
This research aims to assess the nexus between climate shocks, conflicts and poverty on one hand and the role of resilience-building and gender-equity policies in addressing these problems on the other hands. The research will attempt to answer the following research questions: what is the pathway and mechanisms through which climate shocks aggravate poverty and conflict, how resilient are households and communities to climate shocks and what factors determine households’ resilience to climate shocks in conflict situation and how can resilience-building and gender-equity policies help to mitigate the negative impact of climate shocks and poverty among households facing conflicts?
