Tatjana Thelen

Tatjana Thelen is a full professor in the department for Social and Cultural anthropology at the University of Vienna. Previously, she has held positions at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Humboldt University of Berlin and the University of Zurich. She has done fieldwork in Hungary, Germany, Romania and Serbia. During the 2016–2017 academic year, she led an interdisciplinary research group on Kinship and politics at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Bielefeld (ZIF) with colleagues from Los Angeles, Zurich and Bayreuth.
Her fellowship benefits from the support of the RFIEA+ LABEX, with a national funding (Grant ANR-11-LABX-0027-01).

Care, Kinship, State: (Re)producing belonging and difference
Care, kinship and the State are deeply entangled. Ideas about kinship translate into rights and obligations to care, and forms of belonging, including citizenship. Naturalising belonging through kinship remains prominent in public discourses. This generates inclusion (for some) but also difference and the exclusion of ‘other’ internal and external populations.
This research project seeks to explore how kinship and State are mutually constitutive and emerge through negotiations of care.
