Alexander’s Heirs or the Birth of the Hellenistic State
The 2026 Carte Blanche series gives the Paris IAS fellows, the opportunity to share their perspectives on a topic of their choice related to the major challenges facing contemporary societies. This Carte Blanche is presented by Christelle Fischer-Bovet, Professor at the University of Southern California and Research Fellow at the Paris Institute for Advanced Study (Paris IAS) for the 2025–2026 academic year.
Alexander’s Heirs or the Birth of the Hellenistic State
The Groupe d’études des mondes hellénistiques presents its book entitled The Leopard’s Strategy. The Ptolemaic and Seleucid States in the second century B.C. (Brill, Antike Imperien), a study written by eleven historians that challenges the notion of a period of crisis by comparing the challenges faced by the Seleucids and the Ptolemies and the adaptations they implemented. Through interviews with members of the group and a visit to the Sorbonne Institute of Papyrology to explore a unique type of source material, the book highlights a pivotal moment in the history of the state, as power shifted from being entirely dependent on the person of the king to becoming institutionalized.
